Using Expanding Foam To Insulate And Seal Around Your Home

Posted on: 5 December 2019

Foam has a lot of uses, and depending on the kind of foam, you can use it to make your home warmer, cooler, and pest-free. Expanding foam is a great way to deal with a lot of small problems around the house and can be very easy on your budget.

Insulating Around Doors and Windows

Many older homes develop cracks or gaps around the window or door frames over time. Filling the holes with expanding foam is an excellent way to seal the area around the frames and keep air from moving in or out of the home.

You can buy the foam in cans and spray it into the gap around the frame. The foam will expand and fill the void, but it will not put so much pressure on the frame to move or warp it.

Once the foam has filled the gaps, you can trim off the access material with a sharp box cutter and replace any molding that has come off around the window or door frame. Once the molding is in place, the foam will not be noticeable, but it can help make a noticeable difference in your energy bill.

Filling Holes Around Plumbing

One of the most common places for pests to get into your home is around the pipes, under the sink, or in the bathroom. In many cases, pipes that run under a vanity have a gap around them that is not always covered because no one can see it.

Filling the gaps around the pipes with expanding foam is a great option, and it will keep bugs and other pests from using the hole as an access point to your home. Once you fill the gap, trim off the access foam so it is even with the wall and paint the foam to match the wall.

Not only will the wall look better without a huge hole in it, you no longer have to worry about air moving through the hole or, more importantly, bugs getting in.

Where to Buy Expanding Foam

Expanding foam is readily available at hardware stores, home centers, and even some big-box stores in most parts of the country. Take a look at the optional products the store carries and select the one that best suits your needs.

If you are not sure what you need, ask someone in the store to help you and explain what you are doing so that they can point you to the right product.
